Members of the Knickerbockers club of NYC formulated the "Knickerbocker Rules," which reorganized the game of baseball. One of the significant rules was the prohibition of hitting a runner with a thrown ball to send him out of play. The new rules required fielders to tag or force the runner, as is done today. In the first competitive game under the new rules, played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, NJ, the self-styled "New York Nine" clobbered the Knickerbockers. What was the score? |
